    It has taken some doing,
    Accepting that I am a member
    Of a natural disaster,
    Rather than an illuminated literati;

    Realizing that the glowing legacy
    I have imagined for my species
    Does not match the swath
    Of destruction wrought in its stead;

    Swallowing the welling
    Of regret and guilt that has
    Stemmed from this reluctant dawning,
    To buckle down and change the way I live.

    I no longer eat meat,
    Unable to accept the rationale ‘Other animals eat meat, so why not us,’
    Now that we outnumber the tigers
    Three million to one.

    I don’t fly,
    Preferring transportation that does not rely on oil,
    A sticky substance resembling –
    Not coincidentally – blood.

    I do not buy new things,
    As each new thing
    Represents the degradation of very old, very dear things;
    Water, air, mountains, old growth forests.

    I garden with my children,
    Hoping that one day, with eyes open,
    They will be able to see themselves
    As members of an illuminated literati.
