Saturday, March 5th: Participate in our FREE Winter 2011 Skillshare!

28 Jan

Transition Madison Area is teaming up with The Crossing to offer a FREE day-long community skillshare on March, 5th, 2011, promoting community preparedness for the coming transition. Many other organizations are joining with us to offer their skills– The Madison Area Permaculture Guild, MadCity Chickens, Dane County TimeBank, Slow Money Wisconsin, HoopElation, and other friends.

Location: The Crossing, 1127 University Ave, Madison, WI 53715 from 9:00am-5:00pm

Our educational skillshare event seeks to connect those in the community who have skills to share with those wanting to learn them. We plan to offer around 20 workshops (approximately 90min each) taught by local instructors on a wide range of topics that help to build community resilience–food preservation, urban chicken keeping, compassionate communication, Dane County TimeBanking, Slow Money Wisconsin, meeting facilitation/consensus processes, beginning Spanish, and much more! Our goal is to have students to leave each “share” with the basics of a particular skill, but also with resources to go forth and learn more, next steps, and potentially a community to practice within.

We are opening this event to the public, as well as to university students, and requesting that participants register in advance. More specific details are also on the registration page. To register to participate on March 5th please visit our online registration page at:

February 6th Community Discussion– “Global Warming: Challenges and Solutions”

11 Jan

Transition Madison Area is partnering with the local group in offering a presentation and community discussion about climate change.

We will be bringing Sue Loomans to town from Milwaukee to speak to “Global Warming: Challenges and Solutions.” Loomans is a former climatologist who currently works in green building. She is a part of a network called The Climate Project (TCP). The Climate Project consists of 3,000 dedicated volunteers around the globe who are personally trained by former Vice President and Nobel Laureate Al Gore to educate the public about climate change. TCP Presenters have reached a worldwide audience of more than 5 million people and are committed to preserving the climate balance upon which humanity depends. This FREE event will be held in the community room (downstairs) of Arboretum Cohousing (711 S Orchard St, Madison) on Sunday, February 6th from 2-4pm. Donations are welcome, to help cover our speaker’s travel expenses.

TMA is going to host a 10-10-10 celebration and work party in October as part of the global work party sponsored by If you aren’t familiar with, definitely check out their website for both climate information and inspiration.

We haven’t decided what a Madison-appropriate 10-10-10 event should be quite yet, so please help us in our brainstorming process. It will be in the midst of harvest season so perhaps we should showcase some of the wonderful local organic farms we are lucky to be surrounded by….
